Many of our clients are unsure of what to expect when they first enter rehab. In this post, we explore the various day-to-day activities undertaken at The Edge and offer insight into how these work together to contribute to a successful recovery.
- Group therapy, one-on-one counselling, physical training and more: everything you can expect to experience in rehab.
- Not sure of what to expect in addiction rehab? Our latest blog post can help you prepare for life at The Edge.
When someone is about to enter rehab for the first time, they often have very little idea of what to expect during their time in treatment. At The Edge, we operate a highly structured and well-organised treatment programme. We draw upon proven treatment methods such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), but we have also innovated approaches to treatment that you will not find anywhere else.
Get Ready for a New Routine at The Edge Rehab
One of the cornerstones of any successful addiction treatment programme is the development of a new lifestyle and new habits. Removing your addiction from your life leaves you with a great deal of extra time on your hands, and it’s important to establish new routines and activities with which to fill this void.
Far from a relaxing holiday, rehab offers a chance to work on yourself and establish a new way of life. For this reason, clients at most residential addiction treatment centres can expect to rise early in the morning for a healthy and hearty breakfast. There will be plenty of activities and sessions to get through before the day is over.
At The Edge, our programme involves a range of challenging physical activities. We will go into greater detail about this later. But for now, suffice it to say that a good night’s rest and hearty breakfast are instrumental to participants’ ability to thrive in the programme.
Group Therapy Sessions
All patients at The Edge participate in group therapy sessions for seven hours each week. These counselling sessions give our treatment specialists a chance to teach you about the reality of addiction as a brain-based disease. The information conveyed in these sessions is useful to everyone and will help lay the foundation on which further treatment can be built.
We’ve found that many participants enter The Edge without a strong understanding of how addiction works on their brains. These group counselling sessions can be highly educational, and equipping yourself with this knowledge vastly improves your chances of achieving a successful recovery.
But this is only part of the value in group counselling. Perhaps even more rewarding is the dynamic of trust and camaraderie that grows among those who participate in these sessions together. It takes time for these bonds to develop, but by the time your treatment comes to a close, you will know that you are not alone.
You will come to understand that the struggles you’ve been going through don’t isolate you or ostracise you from society. If anything, you will have developed a new identity as a committed member of a group of people in recovery. This is the real value of group therapy.
Participants in Rehab Meet with Addiction Counsellors on a One-on-One Basis
One-on-one counselling is also part of the rehab schedule at The Edge. While group therapy is excellent for educating clients and building a community of support, one-on-one sessions allow for a more personalised approach.
Each participant receives a dedicated counsellor who will work with them for the remainder of their time at The Edge. You will meet with this specialist for twice each week to discuss the specific challenges you’re facing in your own recovery journey. You may also discuss ways in which the strategies learned in group therapy can be applied to your specific situation.
One-on-one counselling gives our addiction treatment specialists the chance to personalise the treatment regimen to ensure that each participant’s needs are being met. If you have questions or concerns that you don’t feel comfortable airing in group therapy, these private sessions provide you with a discreet and confidential outlet to do just that.
Prepare for Intense Physical Training at The Edge Rehab
One of the defining characteristics of The Edge’s approach to addiction recovery is our focus on physical training. Our clients are young men between the age of 18 and 28, and intense physical training provides them with a means of channelling their youthful energy into healthier and more productive activities. This plays a crucial role in helping them overcome addictive behaviours.
Our participants are able to enrol in one of two training regiments: Muay Thai boxing or triathlon training. Every morning after breakfast, you will engage in 2.5 hours of physical training. This occurs from Monday to Friday, ensuring that you emerge from rehab with a new set of developing skills.
Trainees begin with an assessment so that an appropriate regimen can be developed for them. If you are a beginner, you will learn the fundamental skills and competencies of your chosen sport during your time at The Edge. But advanced training routines can also be developed.
Explore the Outdoors
The sense of community developed in rehab is an important aspect of treatment. At many facilities, clients spend time offsite as part of the group, where they can enjoy sober activities in a dynamic group atmosphere.
At The Edge, we continue to emphasise physical activity with our group outings. On Saturdays, we alternate between cycling outings and overnight treks. Then on Sundays, we schedule a diverse array of adventure activities, such as the following:
- White water rafting
- Rock climbing
These adventurous excursions are all about retraining the brain and teaching it to draw pleasure and meaning from sober activities. After four weeks of rehabilitation, the young men under our care will understand that it is possible to enjoy life and find fulfilment in the company of others without having to engage in addictive behaviours. This is a subtle but profound revelation with the power to change lives.
