PROBLEMS WITH ALCOHOL CAN TAKE A NUMBER OF FORMS

At The Edge, to determine whether your son is an alcoholic and needs help, we look to what extent drinking is negatively impacting your life, as well as whether you have developed a dependency on alcohol.

Alcohol misuse occurs when drinking harms his work, relationships, or health. Dependency occurs when his body begins to crave it, leading to physical withdrawal symptoms. In either case, our programme provides the support needed to get back on track.

SIGNS OF PROBLEMATIC DRINKING

Too much alcohol, too frequently, can put you at risk.

Experts say that 1 in 4 people who exceed the recommended daily limit of drinks can develop an alcohol use disorder. For men, that’s drinking more than 4 units in one day, or more than a total of 14 in a week.

There are a number of signs you can look to in determining if drinking has become a problem.

  • Once you start drinking, you find it difficult to stop.
  • You are using alcohol to cope with a difficult event—like the death of a loved one, a breakup, or the loss of a job or personal opportunity.
  • You drink to deal with feelings of anxiety or stress.
  • You experience physical symptoms like shaking or sweating, which go away if you have a drink.
  • You feel the urge to drink often during the day
  • Your drinking gets you in trouble—with the law, or in your relationships
  • You feel that your drinking is a problem for you

THE IMPORTANCE OF SEEKING PROFESSIONAL HELP

Acknowledging a problem with alcohol is the first step. Prolonged alcohol abuse can lead to serious health problems, including depression, heart disease, and liver disease.

It is often a symptom of deeper, co-occurring conditions like anxiety or trauma. Professional treatment is crucial to address these root causes and develop healthier coping strategies.

Drug Addiction Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS ADDICTION?

Addiction is a disorder in which the brain’s reward circuits do not function properly. Up to 60% of addicts are likely to have inherited the disorder genetically (National Institute of Drug Abuse, 2010). In addition, the reward system can be damaged by overconsumption. Those affected by this disorder will continue to reinforce their dulled reward system with substances (drugs, alcohol) or processes (gambling, sex, food ) to increase feelings of pleasure – but only temporarily. Once this happens, people with a genetic susceptibility to this disorder will have knock-on effects or chemical cascades in other parts of the brain that affect things like judgement and impulse control. This is why ‘addicts’ or alcoholics cannot control their consumption. Addiction is a chronic disorder (American Society of Addiction Medicine, 2011), which means it lingers, and symptoms will return if it is not treated.

WHAT IS ALCOHOL ADDICTION?
Alcohol addiction, also known as alcohol use disorder, is a specific form of addiction that involves the compulsive and harmful consumption of alcohol. It occurs when an individual becomes physically and psychologically dependent on alcohol, leading to a loss of control over its use. Alcohol addiction is characterized by a strong urge to drink, an inability to limit or stop drinking, tolerance (needing increasing amounts of alcohol to achieve the desired effect), withdrawal symptoms when alcohol is not consumed, and continued drinking despite negative consequences. It can have detrimental effects on a person’s physical health, mental well-being, relationships, and overall functioning. Alcohol addiction is a chronic condition that requires professional treatment and support for recovery.
